Examples:
  • location of the proposed site is close to two watersheds; possibility of contamination to our water supply

  • air pollutants such as asbestos particles and dust lead to respiratory problems; materials such as cement, asphalt, plaster, and siding may all contain asbestos and yet are still acceptable materials in the BRADS site

  • noise pollution caused by large trucks going to and from the landfill

  • negative affects on recreation such as hiking, biking, and hunting

  • Treated wood and railroad ties, which are both acceptable materials in the proposed site, may contain arsenic, chromium, and pentachlorophenol. Exposure to these substances can lead to adverse health effects including cardiovascular, liver, and kidney problems, as well as an increased risk of several forms of cancer. Arsenic and chromium are regulated by the EPA because they are toxic and are able to leach into the water table if put into a landfill. Also, no one can tell if wood has dangerous levels of these chemicals just by looking at it.

  • lead based paints - no one can tell if paint has lead, PCBs, or asbestos in it just by looking
